Design and Consultancy

Penny Underwood is a qualified horticulturist with many years practical experience as a Head Gardener; Garden Centre Manager and Garden Designer.  She has studied in Europe, the USA and Japan.

Her Design and Consultancy business encompasses projects large and small; domestic and commercial; Western and Authentic Japanese.

Articles on Garden Design, written by Penny have been published in : The Horticulturist;  The Garden;  Water Gardener;  and three series in The Art of Bonsai - Incorporating Japanese Gardens, and Koi Carp Magazine.

A Japanese Courtyard garden designed by her for BBC Gardener's World Live 1998 received an award and was featured on Television.

Other projects include : consulting on and supervising the permanent plantings at Epsom Racecourse in connection with the New Paddock ready for the Derby;  re-furbishing and up-dating a Japanese style roof garden for Celebrity Chef, Anton Mosimann which was featured on "The Daily Mail" 'Weekend' magazine;  designing and constructing gardens, Western and Japanese for several senior Executives,  as well as a large range of more modest gardens.

An interesting commission was overseeing the restoration of The Kyoto Garden in Holland Park, London.  An Important Japanese Style "strolling" garden designed by an eminent Japanese designer, in which some of plantings were removed and will be replaced with the appropriate cultivars; others have been pruned using techniques resulting in a more authentic appearance.

Every commission is approached with personal attention to each client's individual requirements.
