Forthcoming Book

Book entitled – Designing and Creating Japanese Gardens.

In 2004 Penny was commissioned by Crowood Press to write a Hardback book on Japanese garden design.

The Book encompasses the History, philosophy and spirituality of Japanese style gardens, and introduces the meanings represented in their design.

Changing Styles and designs over the Centuries are described, as well as different elements introduced and adopted through he ages.

Choice of plants and their cultivation, positioning and maintenance is explained and practical tips given.

Water and structural features which enhance the tranquillity and beauty of the garden are defined.

As there is an emphasis on practicality in this publication, advice on constructing and maintaining Japanese style gardens in the West is given.

In the final chapter, numerous gardens of Japan are explored, and their special features illustrated.

All through the book are colour images taken on location in Japan and elsewhere, illustrating styles of gardens and various elements incorporated in the changing styles. Also included, are illustrations of practical works. Line drawings undertaken by Jason Hayter, a qualified Architect who studied in Japan, sensitively show details of design and garden styles.

Designing and Creating Japanese Gardens will be published in October 2005.
