I was approached by a Hampshire Junior School in which there was a small courtyard consisting of dreary , broken concrete slabs, overgrown with weeds. As the courtyard was overlooked on all sides by school rooms, and a focal point of the main entrance, it was decided to improve the area by creating a Japanese style garden in conjunction with the Japan 2001 promotion. With ideas from the children and teachers, a plan was devised to include a stepping stone path which circumnavigates the garden, giving an opportunity to experience the traditional granite lantern; a water basin, complete with water spout; as well as plantings of a flowering cherry tree; an ornamental maple; an autumn flowering camellia; some low-growing bamboo plus ground cover to represent mossy undergrowth.
A Corner seat of authentic design completed the project, giving children a place to sit and enjoy what has been described as "A flourishing haven of peace" (C) Penny Underwood 2005 |
